While keeping the campfire burning an unexpected visitor arrived to join the Firekeeper and Buick McCoy around the flames. A long time resident of the local area, Thomas, took a seat on the "therapy" bench and before long the communal glow of the campfire had coaxed some great stories from his recollection.
My favorite was way back in the day, when Thomas was ten years old, his Father would take him and his younger brother fishing at the nearby lake. Now, his Father had a sister who lived in Philadelphia and this woman had sent to new rod and reels as gifts to the boys. And Thomas and his brother couldn't wait to try this fancy new equipment out.
All that week the two boys worked hard at chopping cotton and tending to the livestock knowing that their Dad would take them fishing as a reward. So, by the weekend's arrival...Father and sons stood on the bank enjoying a fishing trip as fancy rods and reels took on simple cane poles to see who'd catch the most fish.
Thomas and brother were casting artificial baits and lures with their new rods, while their Father fished with a simple cane pole and "cawtabby" worms. The two boys were catching nothing while dear ole Dad was pulling in fish with regularity. Finally, the boys gave up "fancy" fishing and exchanged tackle with their Father.
And while the boys began using the cane pole and worms, Father casually tossed out a lure with the new rod and reel, and upon his second cast the game warden came up on them. And so, dear old Dad was fined $35.00 for fishing without a license, for in those days you could fish without a license using a came pole at any age, but use of a rod and reel by an adult would get you fined is you didn't have a license. Poor old Dad was just in the wrong place with the wrong equipment at the wrong time. Bad luck, indeed.
There's something about a campfire that brings out our stories. A group of friends gather around the flames and warmth and begin talking and soon they are sharing their life stories, their myths, their great adventures, and their great tragedies, their recollections and opinions, and one speaker inspires another around the campfire circle. We've lost that sense of communal sharing in this modern era of screen fed entertainment. If everyone has a story then many are never being heard. And that's too bad.
